Operations Management
This introductory course familiarizes students with issues in operations management that affect quality control. Students select product materials for large-scale production and become familiar with creating processes that allow managers to oversee efficient mass production of goods. Operations management courses are usually taken early in a degree program.
Production Planning and Control
Students taking a production planning and control course create systems for monitoring that a production line is creating high-quality products at a high rate. They learn how to plan, schedule and control lines to examine product construction and completion. Common topics include resource planning, supply chain management and operations planning. Usually, this course is taken early in a degree program, in conjunction with the operations management class.
Statistical Quality Control
Statistical quality control courses introduce students to the product design and control process. Course assignments may include creating sample quality control plans. Students examine a company’s production and processing capacity, along with the product quality loss when production exceeds that capacity. Students also analyze the products’ performance.
Quality Control in Biotechnology
This intermediate course is designed specifically for quality control students specializing in biotechnology, including fields like genetic engineering and biofuels. The course focuses on industry safety standards. Students practice documenting operation and maintenance processes for biotech products, check for product contamination and monitor compliance with FDA standards. This course is taken about halfway through a degree program.
Supply Chain ManagementThrough quality control courses in supply chain management, students gain practical experience creating a plan that takes a product from development completion to the market. They create mock supply arrangements to deliver goods as needed. Topics include packing, storage, transportation systems and logistics. Usually, this intermediate course is taken about halfway through a degree program.
Every process needs a quality control method in place to ensure products and services are delivered consistently according to the quality standards set by the organization. To manage the quality of a process or service operation, you need the metrics required to analyze the process and you need a control system in place to monitor the quality of the product or service it produces. The set of activities and methods that ensure the quality of the products or services is what’s known as the quality control system.
In this course, you will use statistical process control tools and procedures to evaluate whether a system or process is in control (consistent) and capable (delivering according to needed specifications.) You will use tools for finding the root cause of a quality problem. Finally, you will propose a method to measure the quality of a process or system in your own organization and propose strategies to decrease variability within the process.
The following courses are required to be completed before taking this course:
