This Diploma is intended to equip students with knowledge and skills in measurements, estimating and costing of building and civil engineering works. … After successful completion of the course, trainees can work in Quantity Surveying firms and Building Construction companies.The main focus of this guide is on how Quality Management is achieved during the site production process, including the requirements for ensuring quality is managed through the supply chain. A transformation and improvement challenge is needed to bring quality to the fore for the construction industry. Quality engineering should be an integral part of the construction industry. The focus is away from checking and remedying defects, and towards defect prevention.Putting Quality into Context.To work as a quantity surveyor, you will usually need a degree in quantity surveying or commercial management accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). If your undergraduate degree is in a different subject, you can take a RICS-accredited postgraduate conversion course.
The objective of the quantity surveying undergraduate degree programme is to provide students with a sound theoretical and practical base to enable them measure, value, cost and specify construction resources, and to become active players in the rational identification, utilization and control of resources within the construction industry.
Graduates of this programme are expected to gain employment in both the private and public sector. The major input of the revised programme is to train quantity surveyors with sufficient skills for the public and private sectors: government ministries, local authorities, departments and parastatals, construction firms, and private consultancy firms offering quantity surveying services. The updated and diversified courses will cross-pollinate existing departments within the Faculty of Technology.
The short and medium term objectives are to:
Create indigenous capacity at Makerere University for training of quantity surveyors;
Reduce the human resource gap in the quantity surveying profession;
Incorporate modern methods of measurement, computerized billing, and alternative construction
Improve the gender and generational imbalances in the profession.
